AN INTRODUCTION TO CAMPION RECORDS

Campion Records was founded by Irving Wilson in 1958 and is wholly owned by Disc Imports Limited.  With the advent of compact discs in the 1980s the Campion label was revived to release new digital recordings of world premieres and neglected repertoire that deserved to reach a wider audience. Many of the works are published by our publishing companies such as Wilson Editions. Initially, the Campion catalogue had a strong emphasis on Czech, Polish, and North American repertoire but in 1995 Campion released ‘Debut’ the first CD by internationally acclaimed Latvian soprano Inessa Galante. Inessa’s performance of the Caccini ‘Ave Maria’ became a worldwide sensation leading to a request for publisher Wilson Editions to commission an arrangement of the Caccini by Nicholas Ingman for Lesley Garrett and subsequently Charlotte Church to record. In 1997 the Campion Cameo label was established to promote works by Latvian National composer Janis Ivanovs but soon developed into the home for world premiere recordings by twentieth-century British composers such as Matthew Curtis, Bill Worland, Peter Cork, Christopher Irvin, Paul Lewis, and many others – see the British Composer Series under the Campion Cameo section of the catalogue.
